Hello all

Been on and off this site for the past few years, but finally decidede to register since I am interested in expanding my lens collection. Got a K-x and the kit and 55-300mm DA-L lenses, as well as an old Pentax-M 50 F1.7 that I have yet to master. Any and all tips for learning how to use a manual lens are welcome, especially with regard to focusing.

Welcome aboard! My delaminating eyeballs need all the help they can get when using my 222 MF (manual focus) lenses. Here are my tricks:

1) A cheap katzeye-clone split screen gets me near to sharp focus with well-lit contrasty subjects. The green hex of Focus Confirmation lets me know when I'm there. And CIF (catch-in-focus) nails it.

2) I like wide lenses with easy-to-read DOF scales, which help me do zone-focus or hyperfocus (where the zone extends to infinity). I'll pace-off or guesstimate distances to stay in the DOF zone.

3) I like real wide and slow lenses with thick DOF, so I can use my dSLR as a P&S. Fisheyes and ultrawides have almost infinite DOF, as do 'normal' and wide-normal lenses stopped way down.

4) Focus bracketing: Take a number of shots, changing the focus slightly with each one. Eventually, one or more will be in focus, hopefully. Mystic rituals are sometimes needed. Sacrifice carefully.

Hope this helps. Have fun!
