About to go K5...

Greetings all,

I have been using Pentax for a long time now, and am currently using the K20d but have basically decided its time to upgrade to the K5. I dont think I can wait and see what the K5 replacement will be, and the price right now is pretty hard to ignore. I shoot with the aim of printing, right up to A1 size, so clear noise-free images are the most important factor for me.

I was wondering if any K5 users could answer any of the following questions:

I shoot long exposure eg pre dawn seascapes, startrails and the noise on the K20 is just not acceptable. I read the noise and high-ISO performance of the K5 is one of its best features - am I correct? Will long exposures (eg 4-5 mins+ at low ISO eg 100-200) and star trails (potentially at higher ISOs such as 800-3200) be really noise free with the K5?

Also, the slowness of the K20 to record long exposure images to the card, is this still the same on the K5? I feel real jealousy when I see Canikon users shoot a 5 minute exposure, immediately check the results & shoot again...

Thanks all, I appreciate any advice you have!

Luke

There's also a great thread about the K-5 and astrophotography.

There's the astrophotography.

Like any piece of equipment, the K-5 has its quirks. It's been a great performer for me, and the controls make a lot of sense. I'd get one over the K-30, though that looks pretty nice too. You won't be disappointed, but you will need to learn a lot - which is part of the fun, right?
