Back to Pentax after a long absence

Hi all,

first post.

I'm coming back to Pentax with a flourish, after my MX and K-Mount lenses have languished in a cupboard for the last 20 years.

I used to do lots of B&W in the 80s, all my own processing including colour neg, transparency and some 6x9 from old cheap fold up cameras, but since the early 90s I've been making do with a succession of digital compacts up to now

My daughter is doing a photography A level next year, so, after a lot of research I decided that a Pentax k-r with both kit lenses would be a good starter camera for her, as it would allow her to use my old lenses for learning about wholly manual photography.

I discovered here that my old Tamron SP 350 5.6 Cat (along with my 50 f1.7) is now a bit of a cult lens, and I've got so interested in the forum discussions here that I've been out and ordered a Pentax k-30, for myself, also with both kit lenses. (It's a shame that I couldn't get the kit with an 18-135 instead, that would've been my first choice, I guess I'll be looking for a Tamron 18-250 as well then).

I can't wait to use the k-30 focus peaking with the Tamron cat, this old lens was a waste of time with a film camera as it was so hard to keep steady and focus, I'm sure it's going to be a blast for wildlife snapping with the DSLR in body stabilisation and focus peaking.

Looking forward to getting a few snaps worth sharing.

Kudos to Pentax/Ricoh for producing cameras with a bit of extra intelligent thought and design behind them, instead of just a designer label

Regards

Kim

Welcome. Your path is similar to mine. I still have my MX and threw a roll of film in it last weekend. This is my wife's turn then the next roll is mine. I have a K5, currentl selling a K20D, waiting for my wife's K30, use a K-01 everyday and will sell the wife's K20D once the K30 arrives. It is going to be fun seeing the results of the MX. Have fun.

Welcome aboard! Man, you sound like I did when I finally bought my K-x (although I used other brands back in my former film life).

Mid life crisis?

I guess that this frenzy of new found excitement for real photography, unlike buying a motor cycle after 30 years of absence, is not quite so likely to kill me.

Well, not as easily as buying a motorcycle after 30 years of absence - no. Hope you enjoy the dSLR experience as much as I have.

Riding a motorcycle hasn't become any easier in the past 30 years, but photography is. Anyone who learned the basics years ago will find everything easier in the digital/Photoshop age.
