Is the switch set to MF or AF?

Welcome to the forums! There are a couple threads on that lens (and third part alternatives)
Are you looking for a solution or do you just want to vent? If you want a solution, please tell us more
Does the AF try, but never locks? Or does it not do anything at all? What camera are you using?

The Af tries and stops but it's never focused, just a little wrong and not sharp. The SDM has been replaced by Pentax about six months ago. The lens is just disaster. If any one has an idea how to improve, let me know. Currently i'm willing to sell the lens.

How does it compare to other lenses you have?
But yes, generally the most you can do is make sure the shutter speed is fast enough for the focal length and that you have a narrow enough aperture for a wide DoF. You can do some tripod tests. But this lens gets a lot of hate on the forums, though some seem to love it.You might be happier selling it off (clearly state what is wrong with it in the ad) or getting a refund and trying either a different Pentax lens (look at lens reviews database) or a 17-70mm from another brand. Sorry about your bad experience, mate

I had one of these for several months and didn't find any excessive focus problems, however I ended up selling it because I was never quite happy with its image quality, especially at 70 mm. I bought a Sigma 17-70/ 2.8-4.5 which was much cheaper and seems to produce better results.

I used it with tripod, with flash, with shutter speed 1/1000 and faster: it's never sharp with AF. My other lenses work accurate with the body (K-5). I'm looking for another lens similar to this one. May be Sigma or Tamron. Has anyone a good advice based on own experiences?

Oh btw, you should update your firmware! On the K-01, it can improve focusing significantly.

Thank you for this idea. However, the latest release 1.13 is installed

Just the last advice I can give. Don't use face detect or AF.C on K-01. Try manual focusing with focus peaking. :X

DA 17-70 is a terrific lens!

Take a look at the reviews in the database. I'm on the staff of a live theater group and take promo pictures for publicity and also for decorating the theater lobby. I use it with a K5 and have had no focusing problems with it. Promo pictures with this lens made it into 3 newspapers for the Shakespeare play last summer and were gorgeous in their colors and rendering. This lens replaced my Tamron 28-75 lens f2.8 lens. Although not as sharp at the 70 end, its flexibility shines for the theater work i do. I don't use it for the landscape pictures i intend to sell, but it shines in the job i have for it.

Have you tried adjusting the camera to match the lens? It's in one of the menus, but without having my K5 in hand, I can't tell you which menu.
