Greetings from Belgium, we don't see the sun very often so outdoors photography is a luxury...
I bought a K-x two years ago, but I only recently found the time to get to know it. Same thing for working with raw files and PDCU4.
So I'm an old beginner

nonsense, throw it on ISO 400, monochrome conversion and hit the streets

I lived in the Netherlands for a few years and barely took the opportunity to take photographs outside (put off by all the tourists and touristy photo cliches.. but also couldn't afford my taste in film and processing). I regret it now - with your architecture and your streetlife, you don't know how lucky you are!
