A new M42 mount user

Hi everyone,

My name is Naman, and I've recently gotten my first M42 screwmount lens. It's a S-M-C Takumar 50mm f1.4. I love its image quality and sturdiness of construction. Initially, the manual focus put me off, but I've come to get pretty good at it, to the point that shots with my Tak are better than those of my newer AF lenses. I am not a Pentax user, I use a Sony Alpha with an adapter, but I plan on getting either a Spotmatic or Bessaflex eventually. More alarmingly, I've succumbed to LBA for these screwmounts. I'm probably gonna pick up a Helios 44, CZJ Biometar or another Takumar this weekend. Happy shooting!

I just picked up a Super Tak 55 f2 for $20, and I absolutely love it. I also have a Helios 44-2, which renders very differently, but I also love it.

Welcome.

Buy an S-M-C 35mm f/3.5. They're slow but great.

Also, buy an SMC 55/2, they're the slowest of the fast-fifty Taks but they're sharper and I think render even better than the 50/1.4.

I'm considering the 35mm f2, is there a problem with that lens? The extra stops are really useful, but if the lens is crazy soft/ has poor IQ then I might get the 3.5 instead. I think I'll aim for a 55mm f1.8 and maybe the first generation 50mm f1.4 just for comparison's sake and vintage value. I'm also thinking of a Helios 44 or 40. As you can see, I'm deep in the throes of LBA.

This was up on the Takumar club page as well.

I just got my S-M-C 35mm f2! Unfortunately, a bout of food poisoning has prevented me from going out shooting. ):

It probably needs a few days of de-yellowing anyway...

De-yellowing? I actually prefer the color rendition with the yellowing. It seems more forgiving on skin tones (especially faces) and makes reds stand out better. The only area where it can be a problem is when the lighting conditions are already very yellow/warm. Then white balancing in Light room is a little hard-pressed to correct all of it. However I don't correct the yellow tint when shooting in daylight/cool light.
