2x converters

Hi. I'm a new amateur member and would welcome advice on 2 x converters. Does it work on a zoom lens? Is there much loss of light and what ones are best. I'm particularly interested in close ups of nature.thanks.

Welcome to the forum.

To answer your questions in order, yes they do work with zooms or any other lens for that matter.

Light loss on 2 x is two stops and as for best well you kinda pays your money and takes your choice. Have a look in the lens section here in this forum, there's information there. Pentax K-mount Teleconverters and Adapters - Lens Reviews and Specifications - SLR and Interchangeable Lenses - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database

The IQ can tend to suffer especially more so on some of the cheaper versions, me, I tend to use them really as a last resort, when I'm really stuck and need a bit of extra reach.

HI paulmountain and welcome.

I should say that there are a number of pitfalls regarding zooms and teleconverters.

Zooms are (or should be) highly optimized designs taking into account that lens groups are moving relative to each others during zoom and focus. Thus, an "arbitray" TC that is not matched to one or a series of specific lenses may have seriously degrading effects on image quality. Also, certain types of lenses and TC's simply won't fit mechanically together. If you intend/expect to have autofocus with your zoom lens, you will have addtional constraints to overcome.

Thus, I advice you to start a thread in the DSLR Lens Discussion- or Beginner's Question Section, telling what lenses you have/intend to buy? Are you prepared to consider older manual focus lenses and converters? etc.

It will be easier for us to advise you once we know that.
