Just joined the pentax family

Received my K30 (kit with 18-55mm WR) yesterday from amazon along with a Sigma 70-300mm F4.0-5.6. Camera feels great and I've snapped a few shots with it for fun, but I am having trouble with the sigma lens. Unless I have it on A (aperture setting) on the lens, I get an 'error' from the camera, blinking F--. I've looked in the manual and couldn't find anything.

Hope to get lots of practice in the next few weeks, swim meets and dance recitals are coming up.

You should leave it on "A" setting on the lens as that will allow you to set the aperture using your camera body. Welcome to the Pentax family!

Welcome and stan's right, only use it on the A setting or else it nearly becomes a manual lens. These are the little things that this forum really helps on. I can suggest that you also download the pdf manual and then you can search it and find these sort of thing much easier.

HERE YOU GO- so you can use any Manual aperture Lens
Pg 259 of the manual
Select [Enable] in [23. Using Aperture Ring]
of the [A Custom Setting 4] menu.
