Scrub area is the best for supporting diversity.

Another hobby you can pursue is supporting various phenology efforts with photography.
the Lost Ladybug Project, Bug Guide, Audubon Society etc. all rely on citizen scientists.

I send images to the Lost Ladybug and Beespotter, it's amazing to find rare insects in your back yard...
