Greetings from Alaska

Hello:

I'm a new member to the site from Anchorage, AK. I'm new to the world of SLR digital photography. I have a k10d and love it. If anyone has any recommendations on where to find a good (and affordable) 500mm lens, I'd love to hear about it!

Welcome to the forum!

I have little insight regarding 500mm lenses. You can ocassionally check the Market Place link on this forum, keh.com, ebay if you are adventuresome....

Welcome, fellow Pentaxian. Many people are happy with the Sigma 50-500 "Bigma" on this forum.

At one time I tried a Sigma 170-500 zoom, but was unhappy with the results which were quite soft at the long end compared to my 400/5.6 M series Pentax lens. Click on my Flickr site in my signature to see some images taken with the 400mm lens, good and bad. I will be adding shots as I get to use the lens more. It gives me the equivalent of 600mm on film, 840mm equivalent with the 1.4X converter. I have not tested it with the converter yet on digital.

As it is an M series lens, there are restrictions to the exposure modes, but for what I do, it works well.

Thanks for the welcome. Before joining this forum I had been debating on whether to go "Bigma," the Sigma 170-500 or the 400/5.6 M you referred to in you reply. A photographer that I took a course with last year is also a Pentaxian and he has a 400/5.6, which he uses to ggo effect. He's a purist and prefers fixed focal length lenses to zooms. Thanks for the heads up on your Flickr site. I will check it out. Take care and all the best!
