I am a newbie Pentaxian having just purchased a Pentax k-30. I am a mom who mostly wants to take great photos of her kids. However, I just purchased a Tamron 90mm macro lens on Craigslist and am having a total blast with that lens. My daughter plays Lacrosse and I am finding my Sigma 70-300mm doesn't have quite enough distance. Are there any 400mm or 500mm telephoto lenses you can recommend, preferably under a thousand dollars? I am not seeing an affordable lens in the Pentax lineup.

Congratulations on the purchase! That Tamron is a fantastic lens. It's great both for true macro and portraits.

I'm sorry to say that lenses beyond 300mm get really pricey really fast. This is true for any system. There are some 500mm mirror lenses which are very cheap, but you get what you pay for. They have fixed apertures, no autofocus, and they render out-of-focus areas in a really weird way ("donut bokeh"). I'm not saying you can't get good pictures out of them, but it's very difficult. You can't just sit way off in the stands and snap off winners all day. You might be more satisfied with crops from your Sigma.

You'll see that a lot of people here use the Bigma (that's what everybody calls Sigma's 50-500mm zoom), but that's a $1500 lens new. Even then, it's considered a bargain among long lenses.
