New K30 and new to the forum

Hi everyone,

Purchased a K30 w/18-135 about a month ago and am really enjoying it. I'm hoping to learn a lot from you all - especially how to use A and M lenses. Forgive me in advance if I ask any questions that have been asked before.

Shawn

Welcome to the Forums Shawn. The A lens is easy. just mount it and it is ready to go. For the M lenses you have to go into the K-30's menu and set it to accept Aperture Ring, then they will work. Last setting in C 4 in the menu

Thanks Patrick,

I figured it was easy enough, just wanted to be sure. A 28 2.8 and 50 1.7 may be in my future.

I got four A lenses last month and I have to say that they are displacing the Ms and other lenses I have, which I will end up selling soon. The 70-210mm in particular is a lens I'm in awe of - never thought a zoom could be this sharp.
The only non-A lens that will survive is my Auto Sears 50mm f1.7, it's a lens with a lot of character of its own that I somehow just clicked with.

But anyway. Here's what you need, I think. This worked on my K20D and I think it's the same for the K30: Using Older Lenses with PENTAX DSLRs | Ricoh Imaging Support

Cheers!

Just got my own version of the K30 with the 18-135, Shawn. I'm certainly happy with mine! I haven't tried my older lenses on it yet - still enjoying the flexibility of this one. Hope you enjoy yours!

Thanks Scott, I'm liking it so far. My A 50 1.7 should be delivered later today... I just need to remember the whole "enable aperture ring and set FL process" and I should be good to go.

You don't need the enable aperture ring setting for the A series, just the previous lenses.

And it's not just the enable aperture ring, if you do buy older M or K lenses you also need to set up the green button to Tv Shift. It's all in that document that I linked to earlier.

The A28/2.8 and the A50/1.7 are fine lenses, I have both on my K20D and I especially enjoy the 28mm as a walkaround lens.

This is the 50/1.7 at 1.7:

Also, please don't mind my signature. I do love my Sears 1.7 but the Pentax-A is a very fine lens

Thanks for this... I must have gotten a bit of mixed info on the "going to the redwoods" thread I started previously, but this is good to know.
