New to DSLR

Hello All,
I just purchased my K-30 In Kit form. I came with a 18-55 F3.5-5.6 AL WR lens. It was on close out at my local retailer for 499.99. They also had a special on a smc pentax DA 50mm 1.8 lense for 130.00. I'm just learning how to use a DSLR. I also own a old ZX-7 Pentax SLR. For most of my time with that camera I shot in auto mode. I'm trying to (and failing) learn about f-stops and aperture and how they work together. I'm been to one beginners class at my local retailer and I will be going back for another one soon. The main reason I purchased the camera was my desire to photograph my 9 year old triplets in sports. I've learned that a 70-200 2.8 is almost considered essential for capturing hockey. I was bummed to find out that that lens from either Tamron or Sigma will cost far more then the camera. If anyone can suggest good reading material to learn sports photography or an online class I would love to here it. Thanks
Tom

Welcome to the forum Tom and thank you for that interesting introduction. I have the Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 Lens and find it very good.

Welcome to the forum Tom.
It's true many people will say that you will need a fast lens like the Sigma/Tamron 70-200mm F2.8 to shoot sports.
Have you consider the Pentax DA L 55-300mm lens? Imo it's a great lens and even though it is not as fast as the Sigma/Tamron I think it will do the trick until you gotten used to your K-30 and maybe feel like upgrading to a faster lens.
Cheers
Josef

Welcome to PF and bonjour from France ... enjoy the K-30 and maybe look at the Pentax DA (L) 55-300 or a less costly Sigma 70-300 f4-5.6 DG APO ... they might be good to begin with ... J

Welcome, fast moving indoor sports as you say are not the easiest thing to do, so good luck with that.
