Good Morning From West Virginia

Good Morning Everyone,

I am finally coming into the modern age and upgrading an old Nikon 35mm slr FE. I both a point and shoot digital just because I got tired of dealing with film. After much research it appears that Pentax is the best bang for the buck. Does anyone have a suggestions about which camera and lenses would be a good start off? I like to do indoor and outdoor photography and like good detail. Thanks in advance.

Welcome to PF Rick. Depending on where you are in WV, you may want to visit Ace Photo in Ashburn, VA to look at and handle some Pentax gear.

Thanks Mike, I am about two hours from Ashburn but I get there pretty often since I fly out of Dulles a lot. I was thinking about the K-50, with the smc PENTAX-DA 50-200mmF4-5.6ED WR and a smc PENTAX-DA 18-55mmF3.5-5.6AL WR to start. I also noticed the 18-135. Any thoughts on this set up?

Welcome from Iowa! Yep K-50 is an awesome choice. Personally I would go for the 18-135. I tend to favor the zooms that go past 55. And you will still get the WR!

Thanks Joel. I believe you are correct. I will be getting the 18-135 as the first lens and a prime 35.

Welcome to the group!! The K-50 will be a great choice! I would go with the 18-135 and a prime lens, the DA 35 or 50. I have both the 18-135 and DA 50 1.8 and both are great values for the money and have excellent image quality. Plus, Ace Photo is great to deal with. Happy shooting!!

Oops forgot the best part! When you have the lenses you want, then it's time to play! You can find old lenses cheap! I got an old sigma manual 35-70 for $8. It's a clunker by any real measure but... for some reason on my camera the rendering of color is really pleasing! possibilities for LBA are endless! And they wont break the bank!

I ordered the K-5-, 18-135 and 50mm Prime from Adorama. They informed me it would be best to order today in case they sold out. They have a 30 day price match so if what I ordered is on Black Friday special they will refund the difference. Can't beat that deal.

Welcome to both the forum and digital photography, you'll be pleased to know the only place the changeover hurts is the pocket.

I noticed that with film photography too. Looks like we have another hobby in common. I love SCUBA diving too.
