Hi. It was suggested that I introduce myself.
I am Drew, a periodontist, in Texas. We take many patient and surgical photos.
I came here, because I have questions about Macro lenses and my set-up.
Any suggestions on the Macro forum, or should I start a new thread?
Thanks

Welcome to the forum, glad you could join us here. I use the Sigma 105mm F2.8 DG Macro and find that nice and sharp, I also have the Sigma 50mm F2.8 Macro for times I need to get closer to the subject.

Hi, Drew! Where are you in Texas? I'm in Dallas, but I've learned since moving here that it's a BIG state. I'm rather partial to macros myself (I use and abuse my D-FA 100mm).

Most people assume that these threads are just basic introductions, so if you have a specific question about your macro set-ups, I'd suggest posting in the "Photographic Technique" section.

Cheers and welcome!

Welcome to the forum, Pentax used to make a specialised lens for dental work, which you can pick up from time to time secondhand.

I'm in Highland Village, although I am originally from Dallas. I take surgical pictures. I bought a 50mm macro and a ring flash. I have to get really close to the pt, almost touching his or her nose. Would I be able to get tighter shots and not be as close, if I had a 100mm macro?
Thanks

I had to do some Christmas shopping in Lewisville! What a small world!

You are correct about not having to get as close with the 100mm - the D-FA 100mm macro has its minimum focusing distance as 30cm as opposed to the 50mm's 15cm. Alternatively, the Tamron 90mm macro (I don't have this lens, but others speak highly of it), has a minimum focusing distance of 28cm, still nearly twice as long as your 50mm.

Since it doesn't sound like you need the weather-proofing of the newest version of the D-FA 100mm macro, you could pick up a used copy of the old, non-WR lens here on the marketplace.
