Switching from Canon and I'm impressed

Switching from Canon DSLR's and can't believe all the great deals I'm getting (EBAY & Goodwill) . Now I don't have to be afraid of using my equipment in the rain/now anymore!

Main reasons for switching 1) snow & rain resistance for cheap! 2) Image stabilization for every lens I own! 3) A chance to "experiment" with lots of OLD lenses and new lenses - just like the old days when I used to work in a camera store.

Pentax K10 for $130.00, Pentax K20 for $185.00, Pentax K-5 for $389.00 and a K-5 IIs for $500.00 (OK, so I ended up with to many bodies! ...but I just keep a M42 adapter in my K10 and stick to fast mostly prime lenses for that camera and use the K20 for work pictures)

And lenses too! 16-45mm for $220.00, 10-17mm for $385, 18-55mm WR for $100.00, 400mm f5.6 SMC-K for $225.00, 50-200mm ED $100.00, 80-320mm for $50.00, Sigma 70-300 for $30.00, Sigma 28-105mm III for $25.00, Sigma 28-70 f2.8-4 for $25.00, 50mm SMC-A f2.0 for $20, 50mm SMC-A f1.7 $25.00, Quantaray 70-300 LD for $20.00, Sears 135mm f2.8 w/macro for $15, 28mm Takumar f2.8 A for $60, 28-80 Takumar f3.5-4.5 for $15.00, PLUS lots Teleconverters & M42 lenses for equally cheap prices.

And an AWESOME P/S waterproof WIDE angle GPS WG-III for $260.00 - holy crap!

An SV mode....BRILLIANT! (with one dial for ISO and the other I set to shift program values)

I thought no one could topple Canon (or Nikon).....but Pentax is on its way.

Pop a split focus screen in that K10 if you're going to use the vintage lenses a lot. Use it full manual, and you'll be glad you have that prism ring.

Hey in biblical terms you are a total Idolater!
But lets be honest.....nothing beats shopping for lenses...especially when some old fart is selling all his old Takimurs for peanuts.

Actually I feel bad at times.
I swaped a Pentax 50mm f2 for am M f1.4.....for free!

The guy asked what's the difference & I said "weight", which of course is not a lie.
My old lens was 30 years old and his had never been used, because as he said,"everyone told me Zooms were better."

When I came home I rolled out a Matt and started worshiping it!
Man the wife was so hack off!

Took me about a month to sell all Canon and get the Pentax items.....hard for me to stop! .....a real nice k20 w/grip & 18-250 going for real reasonable right now!! but I'm not gonna bid....not gonna!

Just ensure the lens and body are both Weather Resistant before taking them in the snow and rain..

I've kind of ended up with a hodge podge of lenses - for instance - I really wanted the 55-300 WR.....instead I have (3) 70-300's (a Pentax FA, a Sigma DL and a Quantray LD) Until I get the real thing I will look at the Quantaray as water proof as in I don't really care if it gets wet! (well, maybe a little)

Welcome Canonguy...I feel your pain! It appears you have the addiction as bad as I do! I simply cannot pass up some of the outstanding deals out there on old lenses and cameras. Honestly, as I continue to learn digital, I am constantly reminded that it is not the camera, it is the eye behind the viewfinder that makes...or breaks the photo. A do all whiz-bang camera will not make up for improper exposure, poor composition or anything else and manual film cameras help me to remember the basics. Besides, its just plain FUN to take an old Spotmatic with a busted meter and a Weston meter, stick a nice 50mm 1.4 supertak on the front of it, load it with Ilford B&W and make some pretty nice shots. More and more, as I 'practice' with film, before I take a shot I find myself thinking about DOF, exposure, shadows and proper compensation to get the shot I want. Its even more rewarding to take some old gear and use it again. Lots of beautifully made stuff out there!

Beware though; occasionally I've come across 'good deals' only to find out that Rikenon lens has a stuck aperture or the Canon 50/1.8 has a stuck aperture or the like new AE-1 Program with the AE-1 'squeaks' locked up with the shutter open. My camera guy still gives me weird looks when he tells me the price to fix it and I just remind him of my old F-150; drove that thing 150,000 miles and 27 years and probably put three or four times what I paid for it into it for maintenance. Every mechanical device needs 'fixing' now and then and just because it needs that is no reason to toss it out! (Even if fixing it costs more than I paid for that AE-1, LOL)
