Hello from Ohio

Hi I'm Richard from Ohio.
I've just jumped from the P+S and bridge cam route to the Pentax K-500 (It's on the way). Had minolta slr back in the 70s-90s...

Didn't have much cash to lay out, the K-500 seems the most bang compared to other makes.
I'll always go for the underdog. Love the idea of recycling old glass.

Looking for recommendation for 50mm - new Pentax smc DA 50mm f/1.8 Lens or an old m50? Your thoughts?

Glad to part of the group.

Welcome to the forum, as for the fifty do you want manual or autofocus?

Both will give you good results, but then I'm a tad bias when it comes to manual lenses.

Fifty Manual or auto?- Guess I'm ready to get back to old school from the film days!
Can get used to it again after years of bridge cam doing it for me!

Thanks

Welcome aboard!

As kerrowdown says, it's a choice between AF or MF. Or rather, whenever I have to make a choice I choose both... The DA 50/1.8 is a nice lens with autofocus, while e.g. an M or A 50/1.7 won't set you back a lot and will give you the wonderful handling you get only from the vintage glass.

And we all know you need more than one 50 anyway

Actually, I believe the kerrowdown is the only one with anything of a lens collection with only (gasp!) one 50 in his inventory! Of course, the A 50/1.2 isn't just any old 50

Hello from an Ohio ex-pat.

Keep an eye on Craigslist, you'll find Pentax kits for sale. You will often find M50 1.7s on there, and frequently A50 variants as well.
Don't discount using an M50 f/2 there's nothing wrong with those lenses, some are really outstanding if they've been stored well.

Occasionally you'll find someone selling off a deceased relative's kit which can have a couple gems.

AF is great, but you can do a lot with a MF lens too:

I prefocused as best I could, waited for him to land, dialed the focus in and prayed

Thanks for the advice everyone. I ended up with a m50 1.7.
Takes me back to a simpler time, when I had to take the time and think about what I was doing.
Will make the time now.
Manual focus. Prime. Amen.

Great shot. That's what I'm looking for.
