G'day from Downunder

Hi folks,

This is a great resource; many thanks, I'm learning a lot. In the throes of lens lust (a recognised disorder) having just ordered a K3.

My first camera was a Pentax ME Super and I returned to the fold with a K100D. As an outdoors type the K3 with the 18-135 WR zoom will work very well - though I've not seen any info on water resistant standards compliance. Can anyone help? I gather it's shower resistant.

The Pentax distributor in Australia is kind to us by setting prices at levels competitive with the US. In fact the K3 is cheaper here and it comes with a bonus Flucard. So I see myself lounging in a folding chair in the bush with the camera trained on a bird nest waiting for the perfect moment (for a 60 shot burst!).

The computer is going to need upgrading. I'm used to darkroom work and will need to take a course on lightroom work

Cheers.

It should withstand an gentle shower, yes, which equates to light to moderate rain or snow. Since weather-sealed does not mean waterproof, however, there aren't really any standards to speak of. But you should always exercise care with lenses that don't zoom internally, as water can get in if you zoom the lens in and out repetitively and it's wet.

DA* lenses are also dust-proof.

Welcome to the forum! Looking forward to seeing your images. If you need a resource for Lightroom, Victoria is a good one.

Thanks guys.

There's an EU standard Adam. And yes, dust resistance will be welcome in the outback. Think red talcum powder blowing around.

G'day Mate, welcome to the PF.
You will find an endless supply of knowledge and wisdom from the members here and best of all, they are happy and willing to share their experiences with you.
You will love the K3 and having it will most likely start some LBA.
Looking forward to you sharing some pictures.

I'm attached to this pic as it took a 500 m vertical slog to get it. Lake Tekapo, New Zealand. f3.5, 1/160, ISO 800, 70 mm

Thanks JB.

At the mo I'm reading up on PP s/w. I have an old copy of Elements that can be upgraded for a hundred bucks but see that there's a good wrap given here to Lightroom.

A pic is awaiting moderation.

Yeah I've noticed the Pentax pricing in Australia, may need to take a closer look!

Welcome from another Victorian.

I can't comment on Lightroom, but DxO Optics Pro is excellent, if your lens/camera combination is covered (check first). On sale for $US99 at the moment.

Welcome, it's a lot easier in the light and less wet stuff about the place too.

True. Misses some of the magic of seeing an image emerge under orange light too. And the trials of threading bulk film into a canister in the dark.
