Hello from Joburg, South Africa

By way of introduction, I have been using SLR's since the early 80's when my dad passed his Edixa Prismat on to me. It was then my mom who round 1990 gave me her Pentax SP500 and used it for many years until the shutter blind became misshapen and the speed became inconsistent so the exposure across the negative was not consistent. In 2010 had some cash available so went shopping and bought my Pentax k-x with the 18-55 and 50-200 kit lenses along with the AZ-360 flash. Great camera and very happy with it.

Welcome, many folk start off as you with "inherited" equipment.

My original film camera was a Kodak Instamatic with the 126 cartridge film. Graduated to an Agfa Silette, first contact with a camera with adjustable shutter speeds and apertures. Gave me a good feel for exposure, DOF and such. The SP500 was a real step up with its built in light meter. I know that cell phones and iphones have better cameras these days but an SLR for me is a real camera simply because of the fact that if you want a good picture it is the quantity of light that lands on the film/sensor that captures the image. Also boggles me how they supposedly fit increasing number of megapixels on a tiny sensor area.
