I used to do mainly landscape, now it's mostly birds

and I'm always looking for a way to afford longer glass.

Then take a good look at the 300mm plus club, and welcome.

Start saving

I mean, with a K-3 you should really look for something like a DA*300 and the new DA 1.4x teleconverter. If you look in the "affordable zoom" category the DA 55-300 will be of the best, but it's far from an F*/FA*/DA*300.

For me the 55-300 fits better than a 300, mainly because I'm not willing to carry the extra weight hiking. And I'm not shooting birds a lot. I'm sorely tempted every time I see what those *300 lenses can do, though...

I've been using the 55-300 since it came out, and it's amazingly good for a consumer zoom. When trying used lenses and so on, it turns out to be surprisingly difficult to find anything that's sharper.

I used to own an M 400/5.6, for instance, and I've had a Sigma 135-400 and (very recently) a 150-500 "bigmos". Some of these do better than the 55-300 in careful testing, but none could get better keepers in real use, except maybe the bigmos, which could just barely do so, offering a tiny gain in proportion to the huge increase in size.

Where the lil'Bigma shines it when you get close. To me the increase in size is a necessary trade off to get pics that require less cropping. At longer distances I can get pics with the lil'Bigma that I wouldn't have bothered taking with the 55-300. Those shots get cropped to 3 MP or less.

I bought a used DA* 300/4 from another user here and it's just flawless. It may not have the same reach but it produces better pictures.

I'll see if I can fit it into the budget for FY 2019.
