How-deee!

From Tennessee! I just recently purchased a Pentax K-x with kit lens and a Tamron 70-300mm lens. While I'm not new to the photography world I am, however, new to the DSLR world and I have always wanted my first one to be a Pentax and I couldn't be happier! I figured what better place to share and connect with other Pentax users than here? So a great big howdy to all of you from the volunteer state!

Howdy. I started in the world of DSLR photography with the K-x kit too!

There is no AF illuminated point in the viewfinder.. I didn't realize there was such a thing until I saw other people's DSLRs haha.. But not having them, and that camera in general, taught me a lot about basic techniques in operating the camera (such as using the middle focus point, aiming at whatever in the scene I wanted in focus, hitting the shutter release button halfway to focus, then reframing and taking the shot by pressing the shutter release button the rest of the way down).

Much information throughout the site here.. and there are quite a number of characters.. don't be afraid to both search for and ask questions.. and especially don't be afraid to take bad photographs! Best way to learn that new camera is to make a ton of terrible photos! :c )

kerrowdown- Thank you!

patrick9- Wow, you're actually really close by! Sorta, lol about 45 minutes away.

mee- Thank you very much! I used a friend's Canon for a wedding (the money from that bought me the Pentax!) and it had the AF illuminated point and I thought it was a little annoying to be honest. I'm already fairly familiar with photography so I'm already knowledgeable to most of the functions. My very first digital cameras were a kodak c913 and a GE x500. I took some wonderful pictures with those but I was always somewhat limited in what I could and couldn't do. Now that I have a Pentax dslr a whole new world has opened up for me!

Jean Poitiers- Salut! Ça va?

Normally I use the center AF point, so the red box isn't particularly critical... I don't know how much I'd miss it if gone, though with selective point it is useful, of course.

Just get out and use it! That 70-300 can show a fair amount of purple fringing, but it wasn't too bad on my K10, much worse on the K5. How it works on the Kx I don't know, and there are some processing tools which remove that so maybe it won't be a big deal. I did find that lens very easy to use, though.
