But here is my first request-Say a person had x dollars (enough) to buy a studio strobe set-up. This is a once only purchase-not upgrading now or later (may add accessories)--a straight buy-in to the best tools for the job. Studio is 20 by 40 feet, 12 foot ceiling, can be painted, power is 220AC 50amps. What brand, what power, how many to start, what basic accessories?
Hi;
Look, when I shoot in studio, the client rents and I use what they have which could be anything from Balcar to ProPhot and HMI etc. But for my personal work and when I shoot editorial for submissions I have a brand you may not know. I use these very light yet powerful "Multiblitz" mono block units. I have five of them, but usually never use more than three at a time for the type of lighting I generally do, which when not in studio is interior locations. They are light, fast and come with all that I need. I use honeycomb grids and rarely use umbrellas. My stuff is kind of a hard light mixed with ambiant sweetness. I know that sounds weird, but I always mix flash with tungsten. I don't filter much unless it is intentional. Too bad you don't read French. If you do, here is an article that talks about my lighting technique in Photo Magazine France, when I was still sponsored by Canon. You may want it translated.
