Welcome aboard! I started my dSLR journey with the K-x - great camera. There is always the K-5iis which has been on some killer sames lately (<$500 with grip) and gives you more than the K-50.

Welcome aboard, we all pretty good here at helping folk spend money, so that said... go for it (the K3), start out with the current flagship model.

But hey don't listen to man still using k20D's daily.

I just picked up the K-3 last week and am enjoying it greatly! This is my first real camera. With all the holiday sales going on I could not resist spending the stash of cash I have been saving to jump start this new hobby. Added a SMC Pentax-DA 18-135mm WR lens to start. Think I want to head Macro next.

I upgraded from k-r to k-3 about a week ago and I can already say that its like comparing heaven and earth. I'm able to produce much better images with the same lens. I'd say go for it. Some random shots I managed with the k-3 and Tamron 28-75 2.8
