New K10D Owner Joining the Forum

Hi all. I am a new K10D owner. I live in Southern Ontario near a small town called Port Hope located 100km east of Toronto on north shore of Lake Ontario.

I was considering joining DPReview, there's a ton of information in there, but decided otherwise after discovering this forum. Found it by Googling in case you were wondering. I prefer this platform - easier to read and follow the threads. I also noticed a number of disatisfied members recently signing on making my decision easier.

I have been browsing the forum for the past week and I like what I see. Seems like a friendly, helpful bunch of folks here with a straightforward approach to discussing the issues. I'm new to Pentax but looking forward to contributing where I can. Appears to be quite a large group of members living in and around the Toronto region.

I started out in film photography in the late 70's with a Voigtlander VSL1, a manual SLR. I upgraded to an Olympus OM-10 in the 80's. My lens selection is limited to the 50mm primes that came with the cameras and a Tamron 85-210 zoom using the Adaptall 2 mount. I would be interested in hearing from anyone having experience with the adaptall system, and particularly this lens, on any of the Pentax D-SLRs.

My interest waned when wife and kids came along (took the usual baby pics, etc. but nothing serious). Now that the kids are getting older, I have a renewed interest. I started with the Canon S2 a year ago (I hope I don't get struck by lightning by admitting this in this forum). I didn't buy D-SLR at that time because I saw nothing I liked for the money. The S2 fit the bill nicely. A very flexible camara but has limitations in low light. Getting decent pictures of my kids playing indoor sports has been quite a challenge.

I bought the K10D last Monday with a Sigma 18-125 DC lens. and Lexar 133x, 1 gig card at Henry's in Oshawa. The Sigma is not a stellar low light performer either but will do until the new Pentax lenses arrive. I am working with JPEGs so far. Took a few RAW photos just to satisfy myeslf the camara worked but don't know yet if I'll got into RAW and post-processing in a big way.

I am pleased I waited for the K10D. I don't consider myself to be loyal to any particular brand but I'm not afraid of looking at alternatives either. I know value when I see it.

Bye for now.

Welcome, Doug,

Great bunch of Pentaxians here. You'll soon love them.

My walk through photography mirrors yours although I'm older. I started back in the early sixties with a pair of Nikkormat ELs and a ton of lenses. Then the family distracted me for several years (actually, I lost interest).

I just got a k100 and a couple lenses and am having a great time learning this fine new toy. I envy you the k10 though. Happy shooting and post some pics.
