Most people I know doing lightning shots don't use triggers, they use bulb modes or long exposures. Keep cycling the shutter and you'll be sure to get some good lightning shots. The lightning is so bright there's no exposure when there's no lightning. A remote trigger works well for bulb, you can end the exposure after the lightning event. A bit of experimentation or looking at photos on Flickr will also tell you the settings they're using.

Thanks for the advice, storm season is right around the corner for NW Ohio and I hope to get some great shots!
