Your images will display quite well at 1Kb; you don't need 1Mb. This site also (understandably) limits the length/width size of your image. I usually aim for 1000dpi by 800dpi. So, if you resize your image to close to those dpi dimensions and then save it, say as a JPEG, at 1K, the images will display on this site.

They don't need to be 1kb. Most of my images are posted at 250-275 kb. I tend to make my horizontal pictures 900 pixels wide and my vertical pictures at 850 pixels high.

850 Pixels high

900 pixels wide

I host my images on Photobucket.

Yes, 800 to 1200 on the long side is best. Otherwise, they overlap the typical monitor width. And those who view on tablets have an even tougher time.
If you link to images hosted off-site - like on Flickr - the viewer can go there for a larger image if they want.

Welcome to the forum!
