Help with camera settings

Hello, all!

Not really new to photography, and I do take some decent pictures, but I am always looking to improve and learn more. This fall I am working on pictures for our high school marching band, and I am really struggling with trying to get the settings just right. I am finding that auto focus isn't the best in a football stadium, so I have been trying to use manual and that's where a lot of my problems are coming in. Does anyone have any recommendations or suggestions for getting the best pictures in an outdoor football stadium?

Thank you!

I have no idea, but my camera has catch in focus which I just learned to use. I plan on using in this in conjunction with some continuous shooting as the catch in focus is not perfect. That is my plan anyway. I just got a camera a few days ago and it has been cloudy and rainy ever since On my camera I just followed these instructions Shooting manual lenses on Pentax DSLRs « robertsdonovan.com

Welcome to the forum, there are so many variables at play here, it would almost be impossible to recommend settings in advance.

Just give it your best shot and modify the settings as you go along... to get the best results.

Night time, but I am not aware of the distance. It's your standard high school football stadium, and I am usually standing at the rail. So I'm think 30 feet, maybe a bit more?

I'm trying to get a general idea. I know there are a lot variables, and the last game I took band pictures, it was not what I wanted. And unfortunately, it's not really something you can do over again.

do some googling about calibrating your focus. Maybe it's front/back focusing. Are you having the same issues in different scenarios?

Your lens is too slow. Get a Tamron 70-200mm f2.8, it will solve your AF problem, decrease the noise in your photos, give you much better sharpness and allow the shallow DOF coveted by sports photographers. Great price too.
