New to the forum

Greetings everyone, I thought it would be a good idea to introduce myself and get familiar with other Pentax users. I just recently bought a used K-x off Ebay and I can finally say I own a DSLR, so I am very happy about that seeing as how I've wanted a DSLR for a number of years, and I've stuck to looking for a Pentax since I love the fact that they are truly the best bang for the buck, they've been around for years, they know cameras, and since they are not marketed as much as Canon & Nikon, they can offer better prices for cameras that have the same, if not better features.

Lucky for me I found one for $103 in great condition and with a low shutter count. But with the low price comes, well, another price, the screw drive auto focus doesn't work. The seller told me that the SDM works just fine as do manual lenses.

With that said, there is a point to the story, I have a couple questions.

1. About the AF, is that fixable, and if so how much does it cost? And if I'm gonna buy lenses, how can I know that they are SDM primary?

2. What advice can you offer? Are there any books you recommend buying or a Youtube user I should subscribe to if I want to learn the basics?

3. I'm mostly interested in shooting landscapes & cityscapes in the meantime, I think I might want to start shooting sports, so what lenses can you recommend for those purposes? The K-x I bought came with a Pentax-A 1:2 50mm lens.

1. I don't know how much it would cost to fix the screw drive. Lenses that say SDM on them are what you would need.

2. I'll let the more experienced folks guide you.

3. For sports, you will want fast lenses. F2.8. The K-x is a little slow to focus so you'll need to learn prefocusing techniques & getting good at catching things in focus. I'm terrible at it by the way.

The screw drive lenses are fast for sports, and cheaper, so if only you'd paid some more for a working K-x ....

If you can return the defective K-x, do so and get a newer working camera like a K30 or K50 for a bit more (well, more like double or so). Without the screw drive AF, your choice of lenses will be severely limited, my guess is that you will be shooting with MF lenses only (nothing wrong with that) because SDM lenses tend to be more expensive then screw drive lenses.

Welcome to the forum

Getting the screw drive fixed is almost certainly going to be uneconomical. That said, working with manual focus lenses will develop your skills and is a lot of fun.

My recommendation would be to keep the camera and maybe pick up an additional lens or two - you can get a nice, basic 28mm lens for 20 bucks or so that will be great for experimenting with landscapes and cityscapes, as well as being a good focal length for street photography. Add to that a cheap zoom for outdoor or well-lit sports, and you'll be all set. In time, if you're enjoying the K-x but find yourself needing auto-focus, you can upgrade to a newer camera.

Enjoy!

Welcome, my thoughts echo BigMackCam, that the repair cost will far outweigh the price of the camera.

Maybe time to splash a little more cash into the Pentax coffers.

I think I will do that. Seeing as how this is my first DSLR, it's probably best that I get used to all the manual controls anyways. The AF is the only thing wrong with it, other than that, it works like it should. Maybe I'll save sports for a time when I feel it's time to save up and buy a newer camera. Thanks for the advice.
