Welcome from a relocated Australian! (Moved to Canada.)

My first Pentax DSLR was an *ist-DL back in the day (2005) with an 18-50 Sigma kit lens. When I moved up in the world, I got the broadest-range zoom I could (18-250 back then) and the DA40 Limited. The DA40 is fantastic, but the DA50 is possibly the better lens, particuarly in terms of speed (f/1.8 rather than f/2.8) and doesn't lag much in image-quality terms (in my experience) while being significantly cheaper, although almost nothing will beat the DA40 for compactness (except the even smaller DA40 XS, but that's possibly TOO small).

Depending on how humid it gets near you, you may want to consider the 55-300mm WR HD zoom as your second lens; then you're good for just about everything. I wanted the Sigma kit lens off my camera and WR wasn't an issue for me (non-WR body) so I bought one lens to do it all. OTOH your 18-55 kit lens is AFAIK a considerably better piece of equipment than the Sigma, so keep it at least for now and build your system around it. You can replace it with something better down the road, when you've filled in the tele end and that fast prime.

Welcome mate, the K50 will serve you well, I recently bought one and love it.
Good luck getting snaps of your daughters, we haven't managed a decent pic of our daughter since she was about 8, she always covers her face when she sees a camera (now 19 yo)
As for the 50mm prime, I saw the DA50mm advertised on an Aussie site the other day for $155, or grab a DA35mm, I picked mine up locally as they pricematched the online Aussie deals for $190, it's an incredible little lens.

So you need to be surreptitious. Either so small (Q?) or so distant (300mm tele?) that she doesn't notice.

One of the great things about Pentax is the range of affordable compact prime lenses. Both the plastic fantastics (DA 35 f2.4 and DA 50 f1.8) are excellent value, and produce really high-quality images. And so do the others suggested above, like the DA 40 and DA 70.

If you can live with manual focus and/or manual aperture setting, there is also a host of legacy K-mount lenses going back as much as 40 years that can be used straight on the latest camera, often with unique results.

Welcome

I think it takes a discerning person to be a Pentaxian in Australia. Why? Well there are nearly no retail outlets here that sell (or promote) Pentax. No advertisements either. Some even question the brand when they ask what you shoot .... lol

Good to see another counter CaNikon shooter
