Looking for a BUDGET telephoto lens for sports/action shots... I shoot on a K-5

I am a college student looking for an upgrade from my kit lens. I love shooting action/sports more than anything else.
What have you guys used? I don't want to spend over $400. That might be a lot to ask for. My kit lens's focal length
and sharpness are pretty mediocre.

Thank you!!!

Arden

It's hard to beat the 55-300mm within this price range, and it's only around $260!

Good for outdoor sports, not so much for indoor.

I picked up a F100-300 for about $10-20, but even at that price would not recommend it. The lens is fine up to about 150mm and then gets unsharp even when stopped down. For the telephoto end, I'm not sure it does better than my A70-210/4 which also loses a lot of sharpness around 180mm.

In other words, if your budget can spring for the 55-300, that is likely your best way to go. (Not sure about the F70-210, which unlike the A version is not a fixed f4 throughout, but ranges from f4-5.6 and so might be better at the long end)

That is what I have heard... I plan on using it for snowboarding/skiing and rock climbing shots

Welcome aboard, if you would consider using a manual focus... there's some real bargains of older legacy glass to had out there.

Even so! I scored a Tokina 70-200 f2.8 for about $300. Manual focus, but really sharp. It's one of the old all-metal lenses, as the Photo Gods intended.
