Greetings from a Hick

Hello glorious peoples! I've recently purchased a K-50 and despite my total lack of anything regarding expertise in photography I've managed to actually take some basic night photos. Currently I'm going through 5-6 books on photography so I can actually use this little beast to it's fullest potential since just from the first 2 nights using it I can tell I have no idea what I'm doing, but that's the fun part! I hope to get to know some of you and/or at least expand my knowledge and become better at photography in general. Cheers!

Hi, and welcome!

Don't be afraid to experiment - it's not like you're burning through irreplaceable film!

I have been playing around in the program that came with the camera and it's pretty interesting, but taking night photos on bulb mode is murder on my battery life. Went through 3 batteries in an hour 0.0.

Waiting on my K10D from Henrys! Studying stuff on you tube and wondering if I should have got a used mirrorless as it seems bulky in pics . Used to use a ME film body, then went to point n shoot. cheers

welcome! I look forward to seeing you pictures.

Before you dive into Bulb mode, you might want to hang out in Av or Manual mode for a little while, once you see what known values of ISO, aperture, and shutter speed give you, you may have a better idea of which of those three you want to change to get the picture you want.

Welcome from a new member/K-50 owner. You've come to the right place. In the short time I've been here I've found this forum to be filled with friendly people who are eager to answer questions. Loads of info can be found here.

One of the first things I did was to order an optional AA battery holder (very inexpensive) and lithium batteries. Big difference.
Good suggestion from pathdoc.
