K-3 vs K3ii

Hello group,

I'm brand new and I have a quick question. A little back ground. I just had my first child and I wanted a solid, durable, and reliable camera that could take some really good photos. After researching for a couple of months, I found that the Pentax K-3 fit the build. Also, I have no background in photography. So, I just ordered a K-3 kit with an 18-185mm from B&H for $989. A really good deal from what I have seen. So, the camera is in rout to my house and I'm already having some second thoughts. I'm wondering if I should return it to B&H and get the K-3ii for $1,133. I don't think the gps will be a make or break feature and I like the idea of having w pop-up flash for times that I don't want to lug a full flash around. But, I'm starting to wonder. What are all of y'alls thoughts? Is the K-3ii that much better than the regular K-3???

Thanks,

Phil

If you don't need pixel shift for shooting still lifes or product photos, then no.

I had the same decision to make about a month ago and I opted for the K3: handy to have the built-in flash and I don't do much hi-res-still photography.

There is no real difference between the two except that the K-3 has the on-board flash, and the K-3 II has on-board GPS and the pixel shift resolution feature. I'd probably hang on to the K-3.

Isn't the consensus that the K3ii tracks better than the K3 (better AF)?

K-3 = on board flash
K-3II = GPS and pixel shift. Supposed to also have slightly better AF and SR but as far as I know no one has actually noticed the difference in the real world.

For your purpose, keep the k-3. I think in your case the flash is more valuable than the GPS.

I already have a k3 that I'm very happy with, and I'm considering purchasing another for a back up. It would be mostly for portraits of my mobile 3 year old. From what you know and have heard, do you think k3ii is a better choice for this type of photography given the improved tracking?

Thanks guys. I think I'm going to keep it. I think having a quick flash on hand would be more useful to me.

Several reviewers expressed the opinion that the shake reduction upgrade was more the result of changing the test used by Pentax from a more rigorous one to the same one competitors were using.

Hi Philintx. Welcome aboard the Pentax forum. You can't go wrong with either the K3 or K3ii.

Welcome to the forum, congratulations on the new arrival and based on that alone, I would keep the pop flash as it can be awfully handy at times.
