Welcome, of course there is... providing that we hear no tales from you of Pentax lens mutilation to suit Canon bodies, which would result in you being thrown overboard immediately.

No kidding, we hate lens mutilators.

All your Pentax lenses are belong to us.

Don't let them scare you. Even if you had performed the sacrilegious act of lens mutilation if you performed a few hail pentax's and promised that you were reformed they would accept you.

I can't promise anything until I get my hands on a Pentax camera for a few days. All my research says I will be happier with Pentax, but I still need some hands on to make me a believer.

For me (YMMV):
Strengths:
  • Ergonomics. Go to a store pick up a camera from Canon, Nikon, Sony, Pentax and just hold it. If allowed walk around the store with it your hand, take some shots, locate the buttons with your fingers. Go home with the one that feels best. That has been Pentax and I have done that three different times.
  • Weather resistance, construction. At least on the k-5 and k-3 series the impression when picking up the body is that it is better built than the competition
  • Body size. It seems that in general Pentax focuses on keeping things as small as possible. That's a plus for me, maybe not everyone.
  • Availability of a vast array of cheap vintage glass. Other brands have this as well I suppose. But it allowed me to experiment with lots of glass with little investment. Sadly (or maybe it is a good thing) those prices have gone up dramatically the last few years and the bargains are hard to find now.
  • IBIS. So all those manual lenses are stabilized
  • Astro-tracer and GPS. For what I do GPS is almost a requirement. Not everyone cares of course but if you need GPS Pentax has a good solution
  • Overall cost of ownership. A Pentax kit (for me) has always priced out cheaper than the alternatives.

Weaknesses:
  • Some might argue but the SDM motors on the DA* series particularly the 16-50 and 50-135 were not up to the billing of a * lens.
  • Lack (until recently) of good modern lenses. The DA 18-135 and the DA 16-85 both show Pentax capable of delivering a good lens that works for most average shooters
  • Lack of long fast glass. Not that I could afford it anyway but it is definitely a hole in the line up
  • No upgrade path until the K-1 was announced. Obviously not an issue any more but it was seen as a major weakness for a long time
  • Lack of third party support
  • Lack of accessories like modern extension tubes and tele-converters. Though we do have a good TC now
I went and spent an hour with the K-3ii in store and have to say, it handles really nice. Used it on a few lenses. The noise from screw drive focus will take some getting used to, but not a con imo.

In terms of TC, you mentioned that there is a good one now. Which one is that and what have you used it on? I am looking at the Tamron 70-200 and if there is a good tc to go with it, I can get by like that for a while.

My used Canon stuff is proving hard to sell and not worth what I was hoping. So my budget is shrinking. Although I won't be able to completely buy all that I want I am fairly comfortable with the Pentax Lens line-up available. I hope they Market the K-1 enough increase some market share and bring back more 3rd party support.

Ideally I would love to see Tamron 150-600mm or the Sigma 150-600 contemporary show up with a Pentax mount. Great Value in glass for the fruggle photographer. (like me)

I don't really notice it. However, not all lenses are screw drive. The DA 18-135 and the DA 16-85 are silent drive lenses. I really like the 16-85.

This one: HD Pentax-DA 1.4x AW AF Rear Converter Reviews - DA Teleconverters - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database I have used it on the DA*300, DA*60-250 and DFA 150-450. Results were excellent. It is not cheap but I found very little image degradation using it.

It has to be hard starting over, I've accumulated Pentax gear for 7 years now and really would not want to have to buy all of it at one time. I have watched the used market very carefully and though prices are up now over what they were I still think that is the best way to go. I have bought very few lenses new.
Watch the marketplace on this site, KEH, Adorama and B&H used departments and ebay.

I can confirm that teleconverter also is excellent on the DA* 50-135, it also works fantastically on the DFA 100 WR. I too have used a 60-250 with this tc with great results.

Thank you!!!!
I have completed my migration to Pentax. In the short period of time, with an extra $1000, the advise in this post and the vast information on this site, (as well as some luck and friends) I have amassed the following:
- K-1
- K-10d
- PZ-1
- Sigma 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6 EX DG
- Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG
- Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 Di
- Sigma 100-300 f/4 EX DG
- Sigma 1.4x TC EX DG (on its way)
- SMC Pentax-DFA 100mm f/2.8 Macro WR
- SMC Pentax-DA AL 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6
- SMC Pentax-FA 28-80mm f/3.5-4.7
- SMC Pentax-FA 28-90mm f/3.5-5.6
- SMC Pentax-FA 70-200mm f/4-5.6
- Pentax AF360FGZ Flash (Broken Door)

What I gave up:
-Canon 7d Mark ii
-Canon 30d
-Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM
-Canon 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM
-Sigma 17-70mm f/4.5-5.6
-Canon 18-135mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM
-Canon 100mm f/2.8 Macro
-Canon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 IS
-Canon 430ex Flash
-$1000 USD

I think I did fairly well. Now its time to take some shots.

Welcome aboard. Was this as hard on you as the Oilers trading away "The Great One"? Being from the same city and all.

Of course in my humble opinion you got a better deal. I think you are going to be very happy with your decision.
