Looking for first Pentax

Evening all, just joined as I thought this would be a useful spot to get some tips.

I'm selling off a Lumix GX7 and Tamron 14-150mm lens which I've been using for work so that I can get either a K3, K-S2 or K-70. I've got a selection of Pentax K and M42 lenses which I've been using with the GX7 and looking to spend about 550-600 GBP to get something useful for site work (I'm a Geotechnical Engineer working on a variety of construction projects from landslip remediation to major road schemes in Northern UK), landscape, wildlife and macro photography.

Hello Nick, and welcome to the forums from another North East lad... Great to have you with us!

All three cameras you've listed would suit you well, and all are weather resistant, but since you mention site work, the K-3 would be my recommendation due to the extremely robust build quality (it's not very long ago that this was Pentax's flagship model, and when you shoot with one, its easy to see why). It has also been around for a little while, so it's very much a known quantity as far as quirks and bugs are concerned (there have been numerous firmware updates, but the current version is very solid and has been around for some time).

The K-70 would be my next choice. It's more of an advanced mid-range model, but from a technology and image quality perspective it is very current - it also has an articulating screen, so depending on your requirements that may or may not be a major point in its favour. However, it's also very new, and I would expect the first 6 months or so after release to unearth a few niggles.

Given your budget, I'd be looking at the K-3 or K-70 (again, given your intended use, I'd recommend the K-3). While the K-S2 is a fine camera, from an image quality perspective the others have the slight edge.

I have a K-3 (as well as an older K-5 and slightly newer K-3II) and a good number of the current DA lenses, so depending on where you are in the North East, you'd be welcome to try mine out if that would help.

I like the purple flower/bud picture in your images. Welcome to the forums. I know you did not mention the K-3II, but just in case you consider it, I do have one and would recommend it. I would note that the K-3 has an lcd screen on top to allow for immediate viewing of settings, whereas the K-S2 and K-70 do not from what I have seen of their images.

Hi Nick. Welcome to the Pentax forums. That sounds like a very interesting field of work to be involved in. You will need at tough camera, and the ones you are choosing from would all be fine. Good to have you here.

Welcome!
I'm a fan of the flagship models, as I use the top LCD constantly while in the field, and rarely even check the viewfinder displays. Pentax has the tools you'll need for the things you want to photograph, I'm sure.

Got a K3 yesterday, bargain at 475 with kit 18-55mm lens, have to wait until Friday/Saturday when it gets delivered to see whether it really was a bargain! At least there is a 14 day return. I see a K3 without lens just went for 555 on ebay. Also got a cheapo M42-PK adapter ring from ebay and a 135mm M42 lens on cashconverters so hope to give the camera a good try out at weekend. Wondering what else I can sell to get some modern lenses ;-)

I recently got a Sigma 150-600 for my Nikon but noticed there is a 150-500 for Pentax available on Gumtree that looks decent if anyone is interested.

Nice catch. That's a very good price here in the UK, assuming the camera and lens are in decent condition... With a 14 day return period, you've plenty of opportunity to test everything

I think it has been delivered (just after I left for work) - unfortunately I have two hours work to do when I get in before I can try it out...;-(

All good so far, kit 18-55 lens that came with the K3 is a little tired but not too bad.

I've got the following lenses so going to work through them to see what to keep and what to sell on, all were bought to use with m4/3 Panasonic Lumix GX7 with adapters so this should be easier as they were mostly heavier than the GX7

SMC Pentax-M f/2 50mm (2 of)
Hoya HMC Wide-Auto f/2.8 24mm
Sigma DG 70-300mm f/4-5.6
SMC Pentax-M Zoom 80-200mm f/4.5
M42 Auto Optomax 75-150mm f/3.9 - waiting for adapter
Vivitar Macro Focussing Zoom 70-210mm f/4.5-5.6

I've just received a Carl Zeiss Jena 135mm prime but it turns out it isn't a Pentax or M42 connection, any suggestions what it might be, Minolta perhaps. Very stiff focus ring so probably sending it back but if anyone interested let me know,

Nick

The advantage to you of the K-3 II is the built in GPS function for geotagging your images. That might be of professional interest. You can also buy the separate GPS, that attaches to the hot shoe for a K-3, or K-70.
