I have the AF Cosina 100mm F3.5 macro, branded as Phoenix. It shows up in the EXIF as the Pentax FA 100/3.5 macro (They are both the same lens but the Phoenix doesn't have SMC)

No experience with any of the Pentax 100/4s. Very happy with the Phoenix as I only paid $82 for it...

Welcome to the Pentax Forums!

I have not experience with either lens, but with any luck someone who has will drop in with an opinion. If you don't get a response here, a new thread in the lens section of the site might provide the answer you need.

I don't believe boriscleto is suggesting that the Phoenix/Cosina is the same as the FA 100/3.5, only that the lens code passed by the lens to the camera is the same as the Pentax lens. Such has been a common practice among third-party makers over the years as a means of enhancing compatibility.

Nope. They are the same lens. Pentax just rebadged the Cosina as a cheaper alternative to the 100/2.8.

Right you are! I had forgotten about the Pentax version of this lens.

After having done the small amount of research, I will comment that both the Cosina and the Pentax 100/4 variants (K, M, and A series) are 1:2 macro lenses meaning that they require an adapter to attain 1:1 magnification. A consideration for me would be build quality of the Pentax (all metal with construction typical for premium lenses of the time) lenses.

The 100/3.5 is noisy, ugly.. and takes beautiful images. Both lenses do 1:2 but the 3.5 often has the 1:1 screw-on diopter. I had the 100/4 but it was long ago, past my memory- event horizon
