New Pentaxian

I learned to shoot on my dad's Pentax k1000. So I guess I always have been a Pentaxian to some degree. For the past few years I have been shooting film on my own Canon TX 35mm. After traveling and having to constantly make sure my film doesn't go through the x-ray scanners at every airport and museum, I decided to bite the bullet and try and get a dslr for travel purposes.

Didn't have a giant budget. Was looking to spend between $200-300. Read a lot of reviews, did a lot of research and settled on purchasing a barely-used K-x from ebay for $200 with the kit lens. I could have purchased the K-r for roughly the same price, but it is slightly bulkier and in my opinion one of the ugliest bodies Pentax has ever made. I know it performs better and is the update to the K-x, but I just couldn't get past the exterior looks. The K-x being so small is just such a great advantage too. Much touted Mirrorless cameras can't do much smaller.

So anyway. The K-x came in a few days ago and my only complaint is the relatively lo-res screen. I'm sure it didn't look bad back in '09, but now smartphone screens have us spoiled. Great little camera otherwise. People complain about the focus point not showing up in the viewfinder. I guess I don't miss it because I've never had it. Also, I use the lone center point about 90% of the time.

I went with a cheaper body so I could hurry up and get a prime lens. I went with the DA 40mm f2.8 limited. Decided to split the focal length difference between 35mm and 50mm and get it in a tiny pancake lens. It should be in any day now from Japan. Can't wait to have that little lens on the little K-x. I think it will be the perfect travel/street photography setup.

Welcome to the forums. I had/have a Pentax K-1000 too. It was my first 35 mm camera. Now I have a K-3II and K-5IIs.

Welcome! I shot a far more primitive *istDL for years and was quite happy with it; graduated from the kit lens by going out and splurging one day, and walked out with the DA40 among other things.

That DA40 spent a LOT of time on my camera, and for a long time was the only lens I used.

I think you're in for a lot of fun.
