New Member introduction

I retired from work in 2013, far beyond usual retirement age, and now divide my time between playing croquet, genealogy and photography. I am very much an amateur photographer, albeit with a life-time of camera use. For the past 15 years I have been a Pentax user, first with a film MZ-5 and, from about 2010 with a K20D. I have recently sold both these camera bodies together with four lenses, filters and such things. Not only am I retired but inevitably I am also advancing in age and I found the weight of the K20D and lenses becoming tiresome on long walks. I decided that a compact camera will suit the present circumstances rather better, and it is at this point that troubles began. The choice is fearsome. I do street, some portrait, no sport but animals and birds, land and sea scape, and nature. And I don't want automatic. I've been looking at Fuji X100t and the new X100f (I like the idea of a fixed 35mm), Fuji X20 and X70, Sony Alpha a6000 and RX100 IV, and Ricoh GR II. This is the camera that interests me the most. I really appreciate knowledgeable information about this camera in use, and any recommendations other members might care to give from their experience of using it and of using the other cameras I mention. Cheers, David W Tattersall

Hi from " just up the road " David. Welcome to the Pentax forums mate. Unfortunately, I cannot help you with your question about the GR II, but somebody will have an answer for you I'm sure. Good to have you here.

Welcome aboard, as you rightly say the choice is huge.

Just do as you are, read up on everything and ask lots of questions... there's a camera out there with your name on it.

Welcome aboard!
There are plenty of small cameras out there. I enjoy my little Q, but do miss an optical viewfinder. I've seen a lot of good images from people with the GR cameras, though I'd probably be tempted by a 4/3 system.
