Newbie to Pentax from Belgium

Hello to you all! I'm not yet owning a Pentax camera...I'm still using my Nikon gear. But in the near future I will buy the Pentax KP...I'm quite impressed with this camera.

Now I'm reading all information I can find about Pentax lenses. Probably I will start my kit with the Pentax 12-24/4, the Pentax 16-45/4 and the Pentax 60-250/4. A pity the Pentax 16-50/2.8 is plagued by defective motors and lots of CA.

I'm looking forward to become part of this community!

Greetings from Flanders (Belgium)

Danny

Welcome to the forum. If your budget allows I'd suggest that you consider the DA 16-85mm F3.5-5.6 over the 16-45. It has silent autofocusing, a more useful range IMHO, and is weather sealed.

welcome to the forums

might I suggest you go to the top of the page and look under the categories listed: "Cameras", "Lenses", "Accessories" and "Articles". You can learn a lot from the info you will find there.

for one thing, you would find a link to an in depth review of the K 3 - Pentax K-3 Review - Introduction | PentaxForums.com Reviews

and the in depth review of the lens Ole mentioned

HD Pentax-DA 16-85mm F3.5-5.6 Review - Introduction | PentaxForums.com Reviews

along with a lot more

If you're getting the 12-24 the 28-105 could also be an option on the way to the DA*60-250. It's an awesome lens on both FF and APS-c.

Hi from Australia Danny, and welcome to the Pentax forums. Your " wish list " of Pentax equipment looks pretty good to me. Good luck, and good to have you aboard.

I too would recommend the DA 16-85 over the older 16-45. I used to own the Samsung branded version of the 16-45, and it wasn't a lens that really gelled with me. I must confess I haven't actually used the 16-85, but personally having DC AF, and weather sealing make it a much more appealing option (and from the user reports I've read on the lens, I've only seen praise as far as IQ goes).

Thanks for the tip.Just had a look at it and it really seems to be a very good lens. Only disadvantage it'll have on the KP is that it's not so wide and you need to switch lenses a lot when you need more wideangle.

Thanks for sharing your opinion.Much appreciated!

I downloaded many fullsized pics from Flickr taken with the 16-45 and
was pleased with the quality...lovely colours, great sharpness, not too prone to flare and lightweight...good for hiking and taking landscape pics. Also on DXO it is marked as the best standard Pentax lens for K3...better than the 16-50. As it doesn't cost much I thought to give it a try even if it's not terribly well built.

I used the 16-45 for a long time, but haven't really used it since I got the 18-135. It's more versatile, and a nice walkaround lens. For indoor work, though, the 16-45 is still very good - though I find myself using the DA21mm pancake more frequently.

Welcome from Chicago!

Hi Danny,

if you didn't make your mind up already, I would suggest the Sigma 17-70 2.8-4 Macro HSM. I was on tour with the 16-45 as kit before, it was OK, but nothing to get excited about. Sold it and got the Sigma, wich is a much better choice IMHO.

Regards,
Frank

I had a close look at the Sigma but with this lens I'm worried about flare. I love to shoot landscapes and sometimes with the sun in the frame. So it's important for me. I read the Sigma is rather sensitive for flare. The Sigma 17-50/2.8 has the same problem. The Tamron 17-50 is better but is said to have autofocus problems...choices...choices
