Hello from NYC

Hi everyone! I've been lurking here for some time. Been shooting with K30 and an ever-growing kit for 18 months and am in the market for a new body. Had the opportunity to play with the K1 yesterday and was not impressed with the autofocus . Unsure of whether Pentax is the best for my uses, which include macro, low-light events, and video.

Hi from Australia, and welcome to the Pentax forums. Check out the Sample Photo images with either the K-3 or K-3 II and the 100 mm macro WR for a used camera option, or the K-70 or KP new. Lots of good, fast lenses available too. I don't use video so I cannot comment. Good to have you aboard.

Welcome to the forum, it's always very difficult to get one bit of kit which covers all, that's why so many folk run multiple brand set ups to get the right tools for the job.

At least here you've got two out of three, macro is usually done manual focus anyway and low light, well the K1 is pretty good at that.

As for video there are far better purposed designed for tools in the market for that.

Macro and low-light Pentax can handle as well as anyone - better in macro IMHO. The K3 or K3II would be my first choice for macro - 24MP gives cropping capacity, no AA filter to mess with resolution, and autofocus is reliable once you take the time to figure out how it works. Of course, it depends on what kind of macro you're planning to do. Fixed position in a light box is far different from wading through plants in the prairie...

Video? If it's really important, I'd get something designed for good video and call it a day.

Welcome to the forums.

K-3II or K-1 AF can handle action/event photography with the correct settings. I have shot sports successfully with my K-3II and Sigma 150-500 DG OS. The K-1 burst rate in full frame mode may not be enough for your objective if you require more than 4.4 fps, but the AF and 4.4 fps are quite capable of shooting action/event photography and obtaining excellent images. The K-1 will give better detail in full frame mode (36 mp) than a K-3 (24 mp), and has an aps-c mode (16 mp) if you need it for additional frames in burst mode.

Below is an address to a thread that shows some motocross shooting done with the K-1.
