New member - Sony A7 and NEX user - but a few vintage Pentax lenses

Hello -

After gaining so much useful information from the PentaxForums website about vintage Pentax Takumar lenses, I decided to join and possibly contribute. I can thank this group for helping me to understand the different variations of Pentax lenses and which are considered the best. As a consequence, recently I read about the differences between the Super-Takumar 50mm F1.4, 8 element lens 1964-1966 (mine 1555001) and the later Super Multi Coated Takumar 50mm F1.4 7 element (mine 6123865) After reading about the 8 element version, I checked the website of a local camera store I frequent and saw that one of the 50 F1.4s matched part of the identifying features mentioned on this website. I quickly drove over and verified that it was the earlier 8 element lens and bought it for $89.95. I've been very busy at work and haven't had a chance to compare these two lenses on my A-7 but look forward to doing so. Of course I use M42 to NEX adapters - primarily FotoDiox.

My Vintage Pentax Takumar lenses include:

28mm f3.5 M42 Super-Takumar 43871 s/n 2934924 with hood and original caps $49.95 bought locally at camera shop (acs)
35mm f2 M42 Super-Takumar 43932 s/n 3052615 with original caps can't remember the exact price, I think $125, bought locally (acs)
35mm f3.5 M42 Super-Multi-Coated TAKUMAR 43572 s/n 7844822 can't remember the exact price I think $89.95, bought locally (acs)
50mm f1.4 M42 Super-Multi-Coated TAKUMAR 37902 s/n 6123865 with original caps (o/c) about $50, bought locally (acs)
50mm f1.4 M42 Super-Takumar no product code, s/n 1555001 $89.95 o/c bought locally (M - A instead of Manual - Auto, different rear element (acs)
50mm f4 M42 Super-Macro-Takumar 43911 s/n 3901479 $99.95 o/c bought locally (acs)
55mm f1.8 M42 Super-Takumar 37101 s/n 2843935 o/c can't remember the price but bought locally (acs)
85mm f1.9 M42 Super-Takumar no product code s/n 4086402 o/c $199.95 bought locally (acs)
135mm f3.5 M42 Super-Takumar with hood and o/c no product code s/n 1524394 $39.95 bought locally (acs)

There are two local camera shops with vintage lenses, one which is advertised as the largest camera store in Texas. Both have vintage Takumar and Penta lenses in stock and turn over their stock occasionally (I do help in this regard ). I've learned about the 135mm f2.5 versions, 43801, 43802 and 43812. Both shops have the 43801 or 43802 versions for about $125 - I'm holding out for a 43812 - one on ebay now for $360. I've got my eye on a Pentax 100mm f4 macro K mount.

Regarding the product codes - I assume these are always found on the back of the Manual - Auto Switch? As noted above, some of my lenses do not show a produce code on the switch.

I also have several vintage Nikkor, Canon and Russian lenses which I won't list here. I do enjoy using vintage glass. I started photography as a hobby in 1975 with a Yashica camera and eventually bought 2 more Yashicas and perhaps 10 lenses which I eventually donated Salvation Army in the 1990s - but now wonder if I should have kept these since I recall some were Zeiss Yashica/Contax.

Pentax, Canon, Contax and Nikon cameras were well outside my price range from 1975 through the 1990s. I've thought about buying a vintage 35mm film camera now, - several to choose from at the camera stores mentioned above, but don't quite understand the benefits of 35mm film compared to my A7, a6000, a5100 or NEX 5N digital cameras due to film, processing costs. Scanning 35mm film to arrive back to a digital image is also something I don't quite understand. I spoke to one of the camera shop owners who told me he only shoots film due to the 'look' he gets compared to digital. I guess analogous to vinyl record recordings which are said to be better than the digital mp3 counterparts?

Will close for now. I look forward to participating on this board.

Have a nice weekend

looking forward to seeing your future contributions to the forum

you are very lucky to have such near by assets

a lot of us don't have brick and mortar photography stores near by ( but I do ) and if there is one, it may not carry Pentax gear

my local one Wolfe's - Wolfe's Camera | Photo Superstore in Topeka Kansas - usually only offers Pentax in the trade in bin and it rarely has much but I did snag a DA 40mm 2.8 XS there about a year ago
