Dipping my feet in

Hi all! My husband (Babywriter) has been a part of the forum for a while, and he’s gotten me into photography as well. He got me a Pentax K-5 almost a year ago, and has let me borrow several of his lenses. He has mainly manual focus lenses, and I struggled with those. His auto focus lenses were not very high quality. So a week ago he surprised me with a new Tamron autofocus lens, SPAF17-50mm F/2.8. It’s made quite a difference, and I’m hoping to learn a bit more about how to use the camera.

Hi Sadi,

Your husband is right and you did well to listen to him, he continues. Congratulations

For me as a beginner, the biggest improvement came from reading Understanding Exposure by Bryan Petersen. A really excellent book I always recommend.

Welcome to the forum.
My wife and I used to go to Arts Exhibits and sell prints and she still shoots with her K-5 and Tamron 17-50. You can definitely do professional quality work with that set up. That K-5 is such a good camera, even though I've moved on to a K-3 and K-1, and she's handled and tried out both, she's never seen a reason to upgrade up to a newer model. I suspect she won't be retiring that combination before the camera fails.

Thank you for your reply. I'm no expert on cameras or lenses, I leave that to my husband! But the camera has performed great for me so far. I don't expect to be upgrading for a while either.
