Isn't the K-3 BETTER than the II/IIs?

The way I look at is not so much is one better than the other, I look at what attributes a camera has that is suitable for what I want in my photography. I really like the way my lenses render images with the K-5's sensors, I like the K-3 too, but I know for sure that I'll always keep my K-5.

I have a Nikon D40 that at one time was part of my wrist, but it's terrible in dusk, most phones take better shots. Well in my hands anyway.

I read about the K5 and K3 line of Pentax and looked for something at the right price, not knowing much more than that I needed better iso and a good sensor.

I need to practice getting shots on the Pentax as I'm still fiddling with the settings when my intended shot has gone. Or my husband has lost patience, and wants to move on.

I have trouble with autofocus, it hunts until I give up and manually focus. It's my default now in the evening.

I think this is the best bet, that and lots of practice. Understanding exposure in photography, aperture, shutter, ISO, get a grasp on that and you'll be off, no worries

The photography class has started, and we are a bunch with diverse skills, some still using auto, others are very experienced photographers.

I have an old tripod, pan and tilt, fairly light but sturdy; I have a diffuser for the built-in flash, and I'm considering macro options. That's on another thread.

50mm f1.7 lens is my favourite, and once the reverse adaptor arrives I'll be even happier with it.

Thanks for the warm welcome.

My photography has tended to become quite ‘post-card’-ish according to my wife, and looking back in the photos from our recent trips, I see what she means. But then my excuse was that I was just documenting what we saw.

So I’ve broken out my good old K-5 and am using it alongside the K-3II, but using it exclusively with either the K50/f1.2 or the M40/f2.8 pancake just to slow me down and make me think more about what I’m photographing. Similar focal lengths but two very different lenses!

Hi microlight, when I review my travel photos, similarities are obvious, the same shots taken, just because I'm standing in a convenient position for the coffee stand or walking away fromthe tour group.

Looking creatively at the beach or broken columns could improve my shots.

Why do you like the K5 with manual lens?

The K-5’s been sitting in a drawer for a couple of years, although I’ve kept a battery in it. So I decided that rather than keep swapping a manual lens onto the K-3II, I’d give the K-5 a little exercise, and the layout is similar enough to the K-3II to make the transition easy enough. So the K-5 is set up on a user mode for manual operation using spot metering, as I’m trying to get more moody shots with deep shadows, by spot metering off bright areas.

Also, my SMC Pentax 50/1.2 front-focusses a lot, beyond the standard ability of the K-5’s fine focus adjustment to correct it, such that I needed to invoke the K-5’s debug mode to extend the adjustment range; something I don’t think that it’s possible to do with the K-3II.

I’m also tending to leave the 55-300 on the K-3II in an effort to try to make more interesting photos with it, rather than just documentary post cards. They of course have their place - just not all the time, I suppose!
