Hello from White Plains NY

Hey Folks,
Just joined the forum, after reading lots of good content from it for a while. I've had a K-1000 since photography class in college, 30(?!) years ago! It's the best camera I've ever owned, hands-down. If I had to give up all but one of my cameras, I'd keep the trusty old K. It's never let me down, works without a battery in a pinch, and is as tough as a brick.

Owning the K got me curious about other Pentax film cameras (I've been on a film camera kick lately, and I can see there are many who never gave up on film). I'd bought an IQ Zoom 140, auto everything, point-and-shoot several years ago, as a small travel camera, but was now interested in vintage Pentax SLRs around the same era as the K-1000. First I bought an ME Super, since that seemed the way to go with the ME line. It's shocking, how small the ME is, compared to the K. It took 3 acquisitions, to actually get an ME that worked, but they were all pretty cheap, and two came with lenses I needed anyway. I then obtained a Spotmatic SP II, again for a wildly cheap price. The shutter sticks sometimes, and I'm afraid the hot shoe is loose, but I'm anxious to get film in it to start shooting.

I also bought a Canon AE-1 Program, not a Pentax I know, but the deal was insane, and I've heard good things about that camera. Only afterwards, did I discover that Pentax made a (rival?) camera, the Program Plus. Nice camera, good prices out there, but I have to "slow down" with the camera collecting!

Interests -- Photography, karate, motorcycling, bicycling. Work -- municipal gov't Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Family -- married 17 yrs, 2 kids, 1 dog, 4 cats and a turtle.
More later, Greg

Welcome from downstate.

Municipal GIS: I did GIS consulting for towns, counties, and utilities in your vicinity. That was over 18 years ago and I'm only tangentially involved with GIS now, but I wonder if we ever crossed paths.

Lol very true Peter -- I've already bought a Ricoh KR-5 Super II from eBay -- it uses the Pentax K-bayonet lens mount, has a self-timer, and mechanical/metal focal plane shutter up to 1/2000 speed. Can't be all bad, if it uses Pentax mount system! Also looking at a Praktika MTL-3, made in East Germany (German Democratic Republic). It's an over-engineered beast, bur I like the Eastern Bloc historic appeal. Oh yeah, and I have a bid on a Beseler Topcon Unirex. So you see, I'm really slowing down on my collection!

I'm gonna like this forum -- where else can I msg folks from Autralia at 1am EST?!

Hey Boris -- where upstate? I went to College at SUNY Buffalo -- that's where I bought my K-1000, at Delaware Camera in the downtown, for a photography class, 30 years ago!

Hi John, I worked for Sam Wear at Westchester County GIS, 1990 - 2002. Sam's pretty well-known in GIS circles, me -- not so much. I left Westchester Govt in Jan 02, to take job as GIS Coordinator for the Town of Greenwich, CT. Been there ever since.

Hi Tim, Armonk! I know the area well -- I'm a White Plains guy, born and raised. I'm embarrassed to admit, I've not checked out the beer bar at DeCicco's. Add that one to The List...

I've been to Syracuse a few times over the years, but not for some time. Amazed that Delaware Camera is still in Buffalo, even if owned remotely. 30 yrs is a long time...

I did some contract work for Westchester County GIS while you were there. I was working off-site (with a company called Bowne Management Systems) so I'm certain we never met. I'm with New York City government now.
