New pentaxian looking for a suggestion

Hello,

I'm new to this wonderful PF. I've recently bought a K-1 II and looking for a couple of zoom lenses to cover the standard range.

Do you think it's better to buy the HD D FA 28-105 plus some telezoom like the FA 100-300, or maybe look for a F 24-50 and add the DA 55-300? Does the DA 55-300 produce an unacceptable vignetting on the K1?

Thanks for your suggestions

Welcome to the forum. I'd suggest you pose your question in this part of the forum: Pentax K-1 - PentaxForums.com
Kind regards,
Mark

The 55-300mm does not cover full frame. I'd get the D FA 28-105mm, and then another FF tele zoom (a modern one isn't out yet, so something like the FA 80-320mm or 100-300mm would be good alternatives).

Welcome to the forum. The 28-105 is a fine lens on the K-1 but I agree with Mark that you should look through the lens and camera discussion sections before making your decision.

Welcome. One comment that I didn't see here before you go to the K-1/ii threads. The 55-300mm DA lens goes into auto-crop mode which has a neat feature. While it turns the K-1ii into a high tech K-5iis (the crop mode is 15.5 mp), the viewfinder creates a black rectangle that shows the cropped area the Da lens will image. However, it displays the entire scope beyond the cropped rectangle allowing you the option to 'frame' the image too....Quite unique and very effective. MY cropped K-1 Mark ii photos are excellent and allow me to use my (generally lighter) DA lenses on an FF body. My FF lens kit for the K-1ii includes:
Irex Firefly 15mm
Pentax 50mm 1.4
Pentax 18-105mm (excellent kit lens)
Pentax 35 2.0
Tamron 24-75mm 2.8
SIGMA FA 70-300mm
SIGMA 28mm 2.8 (Manual)

Good luck in your Pentaxian experience.

DA* 60-250 is nearly FF and can be.modified to be essentially FF. But it isn't cheap.

The reviews of the 24-50 seem to suggest weak performance on the k1 models.

The 28-105 plus 60-250 isn't a bad option on my opinion.

Wow, thanks a lot for the links and the suggestions, I'll look throughly into them.
It's a very exciting new world!!

As for the Marketplace, it has struck me for hosting a lot of interesting prices, with many offers that are more convenient than those you can find on ebay. Is there anything in particular to keep into account when buying in the Marketplace? Maybe a thread with good practices to follow?
Thanks a lot for sharing your experiece guys!!

DA* 60-250mm doesn't offer fast AF and lacks an focus limiter.
The D FA 150-450mm could be a better choice (has new generation motor and focus limiter).
The old FA 100-300 and FA 80-320 aren't deliver the anything close to the resolution of the K-1.

This is what I did, rightly or wrongly. I have the K1. Went with a Pentax 24-70 f2.8, 70-200 f2.8, the 300 f4, 1.4x teleconverter. Next up will be the Pentax 15-30 f2.8. Keeps everything weather sealed. Same with the flash, AF540FGZ ii.

It's tough looking for a modern telephoto for your K-1. Starting from scratch, I'd save my pennies and get a DA 150-450. Maybe something like a Sigma 70-300 to get you by, but honestly, I didn't find it to be terribly impressive on a K-1. But a nice lightly used one for around $100 would be good buy.

My own personal telephoto options...
DA* 200 with F1.7x AF adapter (TC) (if you are used to APS-c, it's only 135 mm equivalent) With the 1.7 it's 200 plus equivalent.
DA* 60-250, never adapted but still useable, you just have to make sure you frame so you can crop the corners.
Tamron SP AF 300 2.8 LD [IF] which with the 1.7 gives me 510 ƒ4.5

The DA 150-450 would make the above 3 un-necessary. But it would also be heavier than 2 of the 3. (The Tamron is 6 pounds.)

With a UWA ƒ4 lens coming, I'm making do with a FAJ 18-35 for the moment. It's not a pixel peeper but I like the images if reduced in size. There are also better FA 20-35 type options as well.

I'm looking for a slightly cheaper zoom pair (second hand gear), something that allows to cover family events and casual photography. Then, down the road, I'd save some bucks to get a couple of reasonable primes.
What about the Sigma 24-60 f2.8? Maybe that plus the DA* 60-250?

Just be aware that unless you modify the DA*60-250 you're going to be dealing with vignetting corners, and it's focus breathing for small close objects is atrocious. 250mm at 10 feet away is more like 135mm. I love mine, but it has limitations.(Also the person who mentioned slow focussing was bang on.)

The Sigma I have no experience with. Were you talking about the 24-70?
Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 IF EX DG HSM Lens Reviews - Sigma Lenses - Pentax Lens Review Database

You'll note, as camera bodies get newer, and sensors improve the sharpness rating goes down. It might be a trend. Let's not project those ratings from 2012 to 2018. They might be rather dismal. I'd suspect this is a lens that was designed for current sensors (2011) and hasn't held up all that well. But as i said, I have no personal experience with the lens.

Welcome. If you are looking at third party lenses, I have a Tamron 70-200 f2.8 DI LD Macro that I like (about $750 new and less used say $500). Look in the Lens Review section Third party Tamron current zooms.
