Originally posted by gaweidert Kind of late now but when I photograph the sun directly I make cover for the front of the the lens with an piece of opaque plastic with a small aperture. This allows a lot less light into the lens and is safer all around. The last transit of Venus I took my old Jason telescope and projected the image onto a white card and watched it that way. The neighborhood kids got a big kick out of it too.
My 8" is painful to use on a full moon so I use a cardboard template to reduce the aperture to 2" for comfortable eyepiece viewing. The solution you use seems very similar in a different application. (obviously not for viewing the sun directly!).
