I specifically chose a K-5 to get a DSLR with great image quality, rugged construction, compatibility with older K-mount lenses, and relatively current technology that I wouldn't outgrow very quickly, but also with fully manual options. You can find some excellent prices on used K-5s in very good condition here on PF. I've bought about 80% of my used gear here on the Marketplace, and I have never had any problems.

Happy to see you joined the Pentax forums.
I own a K1000 but as of yet I have not taken a photo with it. I guess I am lucky to have a copy where the light meter is still functional. I will get around to using it one day soon hopefully.
I can also tell you that smartphone photography is quick and easy however the pics are generally only good for small screens and once printed, lack the quality an SLR or DSLR can provide.
