Well people we're back, and firstly, no leopard. For those of you who don't live in Africa, unfortunately the wildlife doesn't just hang around waiting for photographers. I have only seen 3 and photographed one leopard in my whole life. But I keep going back to the same area hoping .
Now for the lens... Wow! Fast (focusing), sharp, and definitely weather resistant. We had intermittent rain the whole day, and the lens wasn't fazed by the light drops that I had to wipe off all the time. I was very impressed with the image quality, and the focus limiter was also a useful feature. As soon as I've downloaded all the images, I'll add some to this thread.
Thank you for all the interest and encouragement!

Such a lovely bouncing not-so-baby lens!
Congratulations and welcome to the new member of your family. Not quite certain how well the DFA 150-450mm will 'bounce', so keep a safe hold on that baby.

Believe me, at the price it cost if it hits the ground, my body will be underneath it first

Yes, I'm sure you have national mourning there! But on the plus side I'm sure you get Pentax gear way cheaper and easier than we do back here.

Truth be told, Robin, I buy almost everything from Adorama or B&H in the USA. The retailers here seem to charge a pretty premium for Pentax gear. Luckily, NZ has very low import duties so it's often cheaper to import than to buy local.
It does help, of course, to not have to convert from Rands to Dollars. That's a world of hurt, I'm sure.

Yes, Rands are not the best currency for acquiring photo gear and you and one of the few who will understand when I say the DFA 150-450 cost R38000... and that was the cheapest price around by 5 or 6k!
I often smile when people say that Pentax is the cheaper option. Because of higher demand and backup you can often find a comparable Canon or Nikon lens way cheaper than the Pentax model.
