Hello (Pentax Forums) World

Hi there,

My Name's Dave and I'm a new member.

I've been using a Pentax K-50 for a few years until the aperture motor failed so I've just bought a KP. Budgetary constraints mean I'm still shooting on the 18-55 DAL kit lens that came with the K-50, as well as an very old 40mm Pentax pancake lens I picked up very cheap (which I can currently only get to shoot wide open on the KP).

I live in Lancaster, UK and work nearby in the Yorkshire Dales.

Glad to be here, can't wait to ask for people's advice as I try to get a bit better using the KP.

Dave

Welcome to the forums Dave! You may also want to revive your K-50. There are some tutorials and apparently it is not that difficult nor expensive.

Welcome to the forums!

To shoot with your 40mm lens, you need to find the setting "Enable Aperture Ring" in your menu. Then you can use the M (Manual) setting, and use the green button to meter prior to shooting. The nice people in this forum even created a video showing how to do it:

The good news is that this will work even with your K-50 that has the aperture motor problem! It can still work with lenses where you set the aperture in the aperture ring. You can turn it into a body for manual lenses, in case you don't want to have it fix or fix it yourself.

Thanks!
Yes I think I might have a go at repairing it, I’ve seen online tutorials on here and the replacement part can be bought on eBay. Now that I’ve got a new body I feel less nervous about opening up and soldering a part on the K-50 as it’s not my main body.

That is really helpful thank you! I’ve never tried using the green button metering on my K50 but just tried it in the KP and it’s really helpful, makes it much faster and more viable to use the lens.

Welcome Dave from New Zealand!

Enjoy the 40mm! There is lots of old glass that can be purchased pretty cheaply and most still do a splendid job!

Welcome from Virginia! That poor K50! I hope you can fix it.
I set mine to use aperture ring soon after I got my first old lens (a takumar 135mm f2.5) and never set it back. Regular lenses still work just fine and it doesn't balk when I switch to old manuals. I paid 38$ for that old thing, in a tak case with a 2x tele added as a bonus. It started an addiction to collecting old glass(how many 50mm lenses does one guy need?) but that 135mm was still the best deal I've found and remains a favorite besides.
