Hello from Mirabel, QC, Canada

So, here I am, 6 months after buying my very first real camera, a Pentax K-70. Yeah, I don't think I ever own a real camera before, if we don't count cellphones... That said, I'm new to this and I'll be lurking around and not post much. Maybe some "newbie" questions about mainly lens... I'm still figuring out all the terms and the way to handle the camera.

A bit of history:
I'm a dad, nearing the 40s, of one little girl, mostly single parenting from Mirabel, Quebec, Canada. Most of the pics I will take are of my kid and animals. If you have any must have lens, must know stuff/hints-for-newbies, feel free to share.

Welcome Jonathan, from South Australia.

The K-70 will serve you very well chasing your daughter around. As far as lens advice goes, it would be helpful to know what lens(es) you already have

Welcome. The airport was/is in your town, yes? Lived in Ville St. Laurent a couple of years while going to school downtown with the "maudit blokes." Beautiful, wonderful, sophisticated and cultured city. Beaucoup de neige, eh. You will find a lot of folks here who know their stuff and who will help you. Bienvenue.

Yeah, close enough. I'm not in Montreal anymore, further north... And oui, il y a beaucoup de neige!

Thanks! I'm trying to get used to the manual mode, then I'll check to find a super telephoto lens that will not ruin me. Until then, I still have a long way to go!

Welcome from Algonquin Park...

Manual mode is great for star shots etc. where you may have to over ride settings...
But setting your ƒ stop and ISO and using AV is better for general use.

My advice for general use would be ISO 100 to 800, as low as possible while maintaining decent shutter speed (over 1/100s). And for a K-70 (or any APS_c camera) f-5.6.

Use that as your base, experiment from there.

And I flew out of Mirabelle once 40 years ago.
