Welcome - which part?
There are lots of Aussies here. You will find a few familiar scenes in my galleries as my wife and I visit the state often., usually up around Devonport.

G'day Rob,

Welcome - Great to have another Antipodean around! And with your wealth of Pentax experience it should help those of us new to Pentax per se.

Tassies a truly stunning place - look forward to seeing some great images of your home state!

Welcome. I have to visit Australia some day. I can be sure to run into at least three of four Pentaxians. Enjoy your stay.

Gday and welcome Rob. Missus and I plan to travel TAZ in the Toyota Starlet mate. Any tips? We will not be going fast.

Thanks to all for the warm welcome!

To answer many questions in one: I live in Hobart, having been born in Launceston, but with a paternal family heritage from the far North-West Coast of Tasmania (and maternal from North Queensland).

To Pete and Mel: slow travel is essential to the photographer in such a small but crowded island. I've travelled to many parts of the Australain mainland (the Big Island), which has made me appreciate just how quickly the landscape changes here in Tasmania, as you move around.

My favoured route off the ferry from Melbourne (which I assume you'll bring your Starlet across on) would be West Coast via Cradle Mountain (read Geoffrey Blainey's book "The Peaks of Lyell" for an appreciation of the recorded history as well as the landscape of Tasmania's West Coast), Hobart (for the Georgian and Victorian eras built environment), Tasman Peninsular (for the coastline as much as the convict heritage at Port Arthur), East Coast (for sunnier contrast with the bleak beauty of the West Coast), Launceston and Tamar Valley (for the wine as much as anything else), then back to the boat at Devonport. If you get time, explore the Highland Lakes country (scenery and fishing, at the right time) from Devonport, or even on the road from the West Coast to Hobart.

It's hard to know when to stop, so I will.

Thanks to all for your greetings.

G'day from Kangaroo Island,
Nice to see another islander on the forum. There are still descendants of Tasmanian Aboriginals living here. (You no doubt know many Aboriginal women were forcibly "collected" by the early sealers and whalers to be wives and hunters for them and wound up on K.I., which, like Tasmania, was an important location for seals). Some locals are proud of their heritage from Tassie, others feel ashamed and do their best to deny any links. As far as I know, none of them uses a Pentax, so we won't talk about them...

Tassie is the only state I haven't been to. Hope to rectify that some day.
Welcome, mate.

Thanks for the tips mate.

I have included a small, useless pic of the Mrs's Starlet vehicle for our tour of the apple.
I would like to bring my motorbike, or hire one, but she will not be in it.

Peter
